The European Responsible Care® Awards 2020 “Caring in COVID-19 Times”
A record number of Responsible Care Awards this year showcase the chemical industry’s essential role in the fight against COVID 19
16 chemical companies and federations across Europe were awarded for their global response to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Winning companies and federation showcased their quick actions to reshape production lines; integrating digitalised processes to meet new demands for critical products, and making them accessible to health, medical and elderly care providers. To protect workers, companies rolled out impressive return to work plans, trained employees, and integrated broad health and safety measures to protect their employees, their families and neighbouring communities.
The European chemical industry paid tribute to Jean Bélanger, the Founder of the Responsible Care Principles for his commitment to improving safe chemicals management across the industry. In 1984, Bélanger who was the President of what is now the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), recognised the need to openly discuss our industry’s challenges, to carefully listen to the public views and to create an open dialogue. This approach helped to shift the relationship between the chemical industry, government and the public. This was the founding of Responsible Care.
“I am truly honoured to receive this award on behalf of all the people who helped to make it a reality. When we embarked on this journey, we wanted to re-establish the industry’s reputation in Canada, we wanted to do the right thing. Thank you for keeping Responsible Care strong” said Bélanger during his acceptance speech.
